Annual International Conference of the World Association of Lesson Studies (WALS) on “Crafting Sustainable Pedagogies for Teaching and Learning” took place on 3-6 September in Amsterdam (Netherlands). The opening ceremony was held on FC Ajax stadium Johan Cruijff ArenA. More than 900 educators from 46 countries participated in the conference.

Peter Dudley (United Kingdom), the President of WALS, welcomed the participants of the conference. He expressed particular appreciation to the University of Groningen and Utrecht University – the main organisers of the conference, as well as to the speakers and members of 9 countries delegations, including Japan, Singapore, USA, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Kazakhstan.

The conference was started by the speeches of keynote speakers -Dr. Catherine Lewis (Mills College, USA) under the theme “How can we strengthen each element of the Lesson Study Cycle?” and Prof. Motoko Akiba (Florida state University, USA) on the theme “Sustaining Lesson Study through adaptation for system coherence”. The conference had three main directions: - the craftsmanship, - sustainable effects on learning and professional development, - the pedagogies.

During the conference 6 symposia, 350 sessions, workshops, “round tables” and “open” sessions with poster presentations were held. Conference participants learnt about effective ways of Lesson Study conducting, shared experiences with colleagues.

Trainers of the CoE presented six reports about their research in different parts of Kazakhstan, conducted two master classes on “Forms of control” and “Reflection and joint lesson planning model”. Conference participants showed high interest to CoE trainers’ sessions. In general, the conference participation allowed us about the country, school environment, culture, as well as educators and researchers, interested in improving teaching at schools.
